The Coral Sea Calligraphers.
Calligraphy
began in Townsville in October 1984, when the first classes were
conducted at TAFE by Mary Dixon, and by 1986 there were fifteen
interested people who formed the then named, Townsville Calligraphy
Group.
Various
workshops and get-togethers led to our first major 'project' in
1989, with the object being to raise enough money to enable us
to bring interstate and overseas professional calligraphers to
Townsville in order to further members' knowledge of lettering
and other calligraphy related skills.
Over
the ensuing years, members have worked hard together to make annual
money-raising projects in the form of saleable books, calendars,
notebooks, and assorted greeting cards.
May
1989 saw the birth of our monthly Newsletter, The Write News,
which serves to keep in touch with all our members both far and
near, as well as including interesting and instructive articles
on anything of interest to those who simply love lettering.
Full
memberships and 'Newsletter Only' memberships are available. Our
list of members includes people who live as far afield as Charters
Towers, Emerald, Brisbane and Adelaide. Our members include a
professional calligrapher, with some other members also being
experienced in related art forms as well. Others members are just
beginning, working hard to improve their calligraphic abilities.
As
well as regular workshops held on the first Saturday of each month,
we also invite a different interstate professional calligrapher
to Townsville every year to conduct a two-day workshop sometime
during our winter months. These workshops not only encompass lettering,
but also deal with associated calligraphic skills, such as book
binding, marbling, gilding, design, decorating etc.
Since
our beginning, the group has participated in many local craft
displays and exhibitions to try to foster a love and understanding
of good lettering in the general public.
At
the beginning of 2002 we decided on a name change, so we are now
The Coral Sea Calligraphers.
Some
members undertake commissions and can be contacted individually.
Monthly
Meetings are held on the first Wednesday night at 7.30 pm in the
Staff Room at Marian School and we welcome anyone who loves calligraphy,
practicing or not!
