A Short History
Before the Wills Quills shop opened in 1987, William
had an Asian food store. It was just next door to the current address on
Victoria Avenue (164), and had a section for art supplies. This was the
beginning of Williams interest in a nib calligraphy shop, and stretched
back a couple of years before 1987.
Since opening the real thing, the shop has welcomed many
famous calligraphers through its doors, to name a few Ieuan Rees,
Charles Pearce, Margaret Shepherd, Susan Haines, Thomas Ingmire, Diana
Hardy-Wilson, Denis Brown, Jean Larcher. With such a record of visitors,
and the knowledgeable and friendly staff service, the shop has leapt into
the limelight. Its supplies have always been any calligraphic goods from
the traditional to modern. This can be items like; vellum used in the old
days for paper, gold leaf to decorate lettering, and nibs these
range from real goose quills, to the modern steel nibs of today. Then there
is carbon ink and even Chinese stick ink in the traditional sense, both
used today by calligraphers, with the new modern acrylic inks now coming
onto the market.
