Judith Hoffman
(about Judith)

Fish Messages 1992
2-1/4 x 5-1/2 x 1 inch. Brass, sterling silver, gold solder, pearl, copper, shells, coral, star fish.
Fabricated. The design on the tail and fins was acid etched.
I used gold solder to "color" the silver pages and body.
It's hard to control, but you can just let the solder flow over the metal.
Sometimes it flows nicely into etched lines.
You can also try to push it around with a soldering pick.
This book was featured in Shereen LaPlantz's 'Cover to Cover.'
Fluke 1987
7 x 5 x 1 inch closed.
Collage on watercolor paper painted with acrylics.
The title was inspired by an article in the newspaper titled '"Universe may have been fluke'
The text of the article title is 'hidden' in the collages.
Since I didn't know anything about book binding I just tied the pages together with a painted gros-grain ribbon.
Arches 1990
2 x 2-1/2 x 1-1/2 inches closed.
Brass, formica, found objects, fabricated.
The rusty shape on the top of the arch was found on the street.
Whatever it is, I couldn't drill through it, so it's held down by the three riveted stars.
The decorative scroll is acid etched, and the ground line was cut with a jeweler's saw
True Character of the Light 1989
3 x 5-5/8 x 5/8 inches (open)
Cover: brass, plastics, found objects, fabricated
Pages: collaged watercolor paper
A photo of this book was in Shereen LaPlantz's 'Cover to Cover'
